Together

I'm adding something new to the mixture
So there's a different hue to the picture.
A different ending to this fairytale
And no sunset into which we sail.

Phantom of the Opera

You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

The musical is amazing. I marvel at the amount of coordination needed to make this musical work so perfectly... flawless (for me). I didn't pay $147 for a musical. I paid it for Magic. Change of props, coordination, the singing... all were magical. The Phantom is a dangerous man. There are some moments of that musical I absolutely love:

1. "DAMN YOU! CURSE YOU!"
This made my blood chill. The anguish of the Phantom with his face revealed.

2. Phantom appears in the mirror.
How did they do that?

3. The voice of Phantom when he is reading the letter
The voice shifts from left of the theatre to the right, and back to the left again. Simulating that the Phantom is flying around. Coolness.

4. Phantom brings Christine to the dungeons... and the waters.
One moment they are on ground level. You blink once. New scene. They are now three storeys high, making their way down to the dungeon. Magic.

5. The lifting and falling of the chandelier.
I thought the lifting at the start was phenomenal. Blinding lights and all and that adrenaline pumping 'Phantom' intro.

6. 'I love you.. I love you.'
I sympathise with the Phantom. Plus I think he sang the greatest :) Very deep, menacing and threatening deep voice.

Thoughts on The Shawshank Redemption

I realized that I prefer expression of ideas in words rather than in speech. Which explains why I think subtitles are invaluable in movies. Give me the movie plus the script anytime. Movies are made primarily with the written script (though often times there are much improvisation). Words in the visual form somehow, when I read them, appeal much more to me than mere hearing of the same words. Watching Shawshank Redemption again (this time on DVD) allowed me to appreciate the movie more. These are my favourite lines of the movie. I believe what made this film such a great one is because of the script.

1. Judge: You strike me as a particularly icy and remorseless man, Mr Dufresne. It chills my blood just to look at you.

2. Red: Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

3. Andy: Do you know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific?
Red: No.
Andy: They say it has no memory. That's where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory.

4. Andy: It's my life! Don't you understand? IT'S MY LIFE!

5. Red: A wifekiller banker.
Andy: I'm innocent.
Red: You're gonna fit right in. Everyone in here is innocent, you know that? Heywood, what you in here for?
Heywood: Didn't do it. Lawyer f***ed me.

6. Fat man: You don't understand! I'm not supposed to be here!
Someone in prison: Me neither! They run this place like a f***ing prison!
(This got me cracked up like mad. Very witty humour.)

7. Andy: There are places in this world that aren't made of stone. There's something inside..that they can't get to, they can't touch. That's yours.
Red: What are you talking about?
Andy: Hope.

8. Brooks: The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry.
(I feel this description is fabulously true.)

9. Red: Me, I think he did it just to feel normal again. If only for a short while.

10. Red: I look back on the way I was then. A young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left.
(For me, this part is the most emotional part of the movie. Made me cry.)

11. Red: I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright.

12. Heywood: You saying Andy's innocent? I mean, 'for real innocent'?

13. Red: These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them.

14. Red: I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.
(My favourite lines of the movie. Beautifully said.)

15. Andy: It only took me six years.
(Only...)

What Irritates Me

1. Unproductive work. I have come to terms that this is a result of my being a rather rational person, though many times I have found myself to be indecisive. So I get annoyed at myself. So when people are around me, don't spend too much time deciding what to eat. Or where to go. Or what to do. I think I might be a good spokesperson for Nike. Just bloody do it. Unless of course there is something to debate about. Calories, or time, or boredom. And also projects which have many meetings and nothing results out of it. Or maybe a 'church vision' meeting which results in nothing more than barbeque-and-fun session. Get out of my sight!

2. Greater-Than-Yours attitude. This applies anywhere. Music. Movies. Literature. Science. Anywhere. People who irritate the hell out of me are those who claims that one version of a piece of music/movie/whatever is greater than the other, and subsequently (and rather irrationally) that the other piece must be a piece of crap. He denies any value in the worse of the two, and acredits eternal heavenly value to the one he favours. These people are those who think that you shouldn't watch Lord of the Rings without first reading the book (or claim the film is a lousy adaptation of the book anyway); or perhaps Cinderella Man is really a lousier and worthless ripoff of Raging Bull (or Ron Howard is lousy, watch Martin Scorsese instead); or listen to the Beatles instead of Jet. Get out of my sight! They might be milder, but they are not worthless.

3. People who have a point to prove. They might want to read Plato's Republic so that they sound intellectual. They might want to read Calvin's Institutes so that they can correct others. They might want be involved in the arts so that they appear cultured and refined. They might want to study the Game Theory so that they appear rational and 'thinking'. Whatever they do, it was not because of the 'eternal and heavenly' value that these things have in them, but because they have something to prove. They do not wish to have a glimpse of the glory of God; they only want to impress men. I may suggest that these kinds of people are most easily detected when they jump at the slightest of coincidences to kick up a conversation of the latest treasure they have been engrossed with. Get out of my sight!

4. People who think their music is the Saviour of all Mankind that they must blare it loudly in MRT trains. Nevermind if it was music by U2 or The Beatles or at least some decent bands, but they had to broadcast awful songs like that Tokyo Drift theme song. Alert: new irritating song in the airwaves: Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend. Expect it to hit MRT trains soon.

Story of the Teenager

Doesn't everyone struggle with infatuation? Or what I call 'Teenage Affection'. The teenager is not sure if he abhors it, or if he actually like the pleasure of being in that state of affection. It was something new to him when he was a teenager. It felt good. It felt like what people call 'being in love', only that Love is actually very far from it. It felt like you were giddy when you are near the person. It felt like your pulse is racing, and your heart beats faster. It felt like any kind of cliches that were already mentioned countless times. It felt just like what people describe. It felt normal. It comes at a time when a guy or a girl is discovering his or her sexuality.

But infatuation has its own tests. The best test is the test of time. Love must be eternal, so if at any moment that affection cannot sustain itself over time, it must be infatutation, and not love. And once the teenager discovers this truth, he finds that almost any affections he had felt belonged to the category of Teenage Affection. What does he need to turn it into Love?

The Will. The Will to sustain it. Eternally.

If all the teenager ever hopes to get in this kind of affection is to feel being "loved", and feel the pleasures of it, then he will come to realize that the feeling will be short lived. The pleasure will be short lived. And unlike the first time, he now realizes that this affection is not special to the one he is attracted to. He realizes that he can find this sort of pleasure and sub-Love in almost any persons whom he finds attractive. So he changes the person, but he still gets the same pleasure and the feelings out of it. And it all feels the same to him.

And then there must come a time when the teenager must grow up. He would want to find a kind of Affection quite unlike any other he had experienced before. He might get pleasure, but pleasure is definitely not what he is aiming for. A kind of Affection that must stand the test of time. The test of place. Whatever tests being thrown at It. Yes, even the test of Disappointment. For Love can Disappoint, but it can never Fail. Love can break hearts, but it will not be destroyed. Love can be Trying, but it cannot Die.

Over time, the teenager finds that Love is something quite extraordinary. Quite unlike other kinds of Affection. Quite unlike something he used to imagine. Quite unlike something he would find himself easily capable of doing. Sustain the Will? For Eternity? That is not easy. That would be impossible even. The teenager loses hope, and wonders if one day God would bring such a special person to him. He wonders if he would taste such a wonderful and delicate Affection he longs to have.

He still struggles with infatuation these days. But each time these affections come, he simply shrugs it off and say, 'I shall not be bound to it. I must find the True Affection'. Sometimes he wonder, though, if he is deceiving himself, if he had purposefully avoided all sorts of affections just because he knew Love is a Very Difficult Affection. But can not Love grow from simple affections?

And so the teenager grows older and older, still waiting for Love to come. He does not mind waiting. Afterall, the time he has to wait is nothing compared to the time that Love must exist, and sustain Itself.

On Forming Casual Relationships Casually

It took our Singapore-educated society some two or three days after the Ministers' Pay Rise was announced before someone, finally someone, with enough reason in his head, wrote to the Straits Times to say that some of the ministers have formed a very convenient and casual relationship between High Pay and Good Performance.

Simply put, pay the ministers well, and they will perform well. The MM declared that we shall not put Singapore's economy worth by the billions at jeopardy by reducing the pay of the ministers by the millions.

This rational unknown person, whom I applaud, argued that they are forming a casual relationship between two things that cannot be linked very closely together. Just because Singapore performed really well these 40 years and at the same time ministers are paid well does not mean they performed well because they are paid well. It is like saying, since I observe that the sun rises in the morning and at the same time the cock crows, therefore the sun must have risen because and by virtue of the crowing of the cock. But don't get me wrong though, I still support that the ministers be paid well. Just that the kind of logic MM gives is really questionable.

Casual relationship.

Which brings me to the idea that you can find out a person's character just by observing the way he plays a game. If that person is treacherous in a game, he might be treacherous in real life. That is quite nonsense to me. I don't say it is wrong. I am saying there is little evidence or reason to assume that. One might as well say we could observe the character of people by their manner of eating and drinking.

Simply put, there are certain ways games are designed to be played. I have never played a game where the objective is to lose, except this game called Mad. And even then there was a way to play it! Most games designed requires people to be "selfish", whether is it accumulating the most money, destroying the most armies, or whatever. No one designs a game and say, 'The idea is to help the others win as much as they can.' No. People create games so that you win. That's why it is called a Game.

I have played games like Settlers of Catan with Christian friends. I enjoy playing with most of them, because they could understand it was a game. On the internet, they were witty and unscrupulous. Changing two cards for one of mine? Well, that was smart. They knew I was desperate, so the exchange was made. Was I being treacherous or was I being witty when it was later my turn to play to their expense? That was part of the game. What I cannot stand is that people (especially Christians) try to bring in the Second Greatest Commandment into games and then say, 'You are being treacherous!' No, again I say, this is the way it is meant to be played! But I understand where this is coming from. I once played a casual game with Christians only to be culturally shocked. In a really bad way.

Sometimes people take games too seriously. Sometimes people take it too liberally. Businesses become games, and then there was their 'right' to be treacherous. Of course that would be wrong. But go back to good old fun board games, I say, let's play it honestly. And most of the times to be honest and be the least contrived, is to play it as it was meant to be played. Someone who plays a game like Risk and then offers to extend mercies and all sorts of 'Christian antics' are not necessarily Good Christians. That is a casual relationship. That is being contrived. Play it as it was meant to be. Kill off the armies if your mission card says 'Kill the Armies'. The way it was meant to be played. Or, if one cannot stand this kind of 'treachery', don't play it lest one becomes contrived. Most games are like that. Board games, computer games, whatever it is.

But that is what I think of course. I know there are people who disagree with me, but I won't argue further. I just see no true relationship between the way a person plays a game and his character. Maybe there is. But I am saying you cannot establish the relationship rationally.

If you can, then I am the most treacherous person on earth. Just by playing a game it was meant to be played.

Could not this be one of the greatest songs I've heard?

"Sometimes you can't make it on your own" - U2

Tough, you think you've got the stuff
You're telling me and anyone
You're hard enough

You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
For you tonight

Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

We fight all the time
You and I
That's alright
We're the same soul
I don't need
I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more

Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

I know that we don't talk
I'm sick of it all
Can you hear me when I
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me...

Where are we now?
I've still got to let you know
A house still doesn't make a home
Don't leave me here alone...

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Sometimes you can't make it
The best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're the reason why the opera is in me. Isn't this a very beautiful expression for the beloved?

The Movies Are Coming

All hail the onslaught of movies coming our way!

1. Spiderman 3
2. Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End
3. Ocean's Thirteen
4. Shrek 3
5. The Bourne Ultimatum

All sequels. Siao Liao. Gonna burn holes in my pockets.

By the way, 'The Reaping' got a 7% approval on Rottentomatoes. One of the lowest I have ever seen. What's Hilary Swank doing on that show? One look and you know it is crap. One reviewer cracked me up. She said, 'You had me at Hell.' Wahhaha.

But guess what, Swank also acted in 'Insomnia', which is *gasp* a Nolan film! Wow, I need to see this show.

On Freedom Writers and Memento

After watching Freedom Writers, I figured that my future wife would be like Hilary Swank. Ok, not her, but the character she played (Erin Gruwell) Powerful woman who influenced a class of people who are racists... And she did 3 jobs to fund her teaching job. Who would do such a thing for her students? Gruwell is witty, determined, has a mind of her own, and goes an extra mile to make things work. That is what made her a great teacher. Normal teachers will simply sit down and give up hope on her students. Only thing she lacked though, is a loving and understanding husband. In the movie, because she was overly concerned with her students and her job (or so her husband thought), it ended up in a divorce. Come on, who will not love such a wife? I don't mind being her husband. All in all, it was a good movie.

Except only Qiaoli thinks it is boring.

*After the show*
Me: How? Are you inspired to be a teacher now? *fists clenched in resolution*
QL: Har? You so easily inspired meh?
Me: ......

Memento has just made me admire the directorial skills of Christopher Nolan more. Out of the 5 shows he made, I have seen 3, and all three are great movies, the other two being Batman Begins and The Prestige. This shows that a director does not need to be old and experienced like the Scorseses or the Eastwoods or the Spielbergs. Another young director I like is Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Superman Returns). Memento was told in non-chronological order. It starts with the ending, and one must stay hard to follow the sequence (or non-sequence) of the movie, and make the movie chronological in his own mind. This allows for the twist in the ending. Memento has a great twist, and I think Nolan is playing on confusion, which works very very well. One moment we are suspecting that Natalie is bad, the other moment we are suspecting that Teddy is the one. All throughout the movie the viewer is forced to keep asking questions and keep suspecting, and there was even once in the movie that I exclaimed 'This is so clever!'. One of the best contemporary movies I have watched.
